What is IMAP and what is POP (POP3)?
Montclair State University E-mail is an IMAP account and should be set-up accordingly on mail clients and smartphones. IMAP is a type of mail server which is designed to retain messages and user preferences on the server itself as opposed to an individual computer. Mail.Montclair is an IMAP server. POP is a type of mail server which is designed to have e-mail downloaded periodically to a local computer for storage. Although POP servers can store messages on the server, they are not designed to retain an entire mailbox of messages and user preferences. POP servers usually have a smaller storage area than IMAP servers.
