What Is Illegal Discrimination in the Workplace?
In Michigan, employment discrimination occurs when an employer takes adverse, illegal action against an employee simply because they are a member of a protected class. Protected classes include workers over the age of 40, employees who are disabled or considered disabled, members of a racial minority and female employees, among others. It is also possible for men, Caucasians and others to be subject to reverse discrimination. Adverse employment action is not limited to just firing an employee. It can be a variety of unfair treatment because of an employee’s age, race, disability, sex, or because the employee reported illegal discrimination or activity.
