Plastic is cheaper as many as you have to do and they will hold up well if you install them right. How close depends on how thick you plan on putting the stucco on. I’ve had luck with making my own pin’s drill a 1/4 ” hold and make a wire Bobbie pin with a 1/4″ bind outwards on both ends. You have to squeeze them together to get them in the hold but they spring back locking in behind the brick. You have to custom make each one but with stucco in the hold they will not come out and the lath will stay up as long as the bricks and blocks do. Plus it is cheap.
