What is hypoglycemia and what can I do to prevent or treat it?
A ………. Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar. It’s very common in very small breeds or young puppies of small breeds. Signs of low blood sugar are lethargy, trembling, non-responsiveness. Treatment includes having Nutri-Cal on hand (a high calorie food supplement found with pet vitamins at your local pet store), and keeping the puppy warm. In an emergency, you can substitute either honey or corn syrup. If your puppy does not respond very quickly–within a couple of minutes–it’s time for the vet. This can be life threatening and is not something to be casual about. One way to avoid this problem is to feed a very small puppy or dog canned food during the day. There should be extra calories in there to help ward off an attack. Remember this is entirely treatable. It is recommended that you have Nutri-Cal on hand before your puppy comes home. TOP Q7 ……….
