Opinions vary on the exact definition of this natural state of mind. First of all, contrary to what is commonly believed by many, hypnosis is NOT a “sleep” state even though a person in hypnosis may appear to be sleeping. I prefer the way my late mentor, Charles Tebbetts, defined hypnosis, so let me quote his exact words as written in MIRACLES ON DEMAND (which is, unfortunately, no longer in print): “There is no legal definition of hypnosis. Webster’s dictionary describes it incorrectly as an artificially induced sleep, but it is actually a natural state of mind and induced normally in everyday living much more often than it is induced artificially. Hypnosis is a state of focused consciousness. Your hypnotherapist will assist you in learning how to achieve this state by guiding you into it. Once this has been achieved, you will then receive what are called hypnotic suggestions. These suggestions will enable you to use the power of hypnosis in your life and make the changes you desire. Hypnosis is a tool that can help you just, like it has helped millions of other people to take back control of their lives. Hypnosis can help you change old habits and to provide you with motivation to do the things that you may have been putting off. Hypnosis has been sanctioned and used by the medical community since 1958 to help patients overcome chronic pain, create anesthesia, and heal psychogenic illnesses. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis have been shown to be effective in reducing stress and stress-related illnesses. Hypnosis has also been shown to help mothers give birth to their children with little or no pain.

Hypnosis is a natural and commonly occurring state of mind. It is a state of mind that we humans have experienced often, most of us go into this state many times during the day, even those who think they can’t be hypnotized, experience the hypnotic trance state at east three times a day. In this common state of mind known as hypnosis, our minds can become more powerfully focused. While in this state we can condition our minds to respond in a specific way. This can be extremely beneficial as it allows us to regain control over our seemingly uncontrollable responses. And since hypnosis also enables us to use more of our abilities, learning self-hypnosis is the preeminent act of self-control.
