What is humanistic approach?
The humanistic approach is based on the philosophy of humanism which basically says that man is the pinnacle of all things and that humans are basically good and can solve their own problems. It is not that simple actually but that is basically it. Humanism then encompasses all major theories or approaches to Psychology: Psychodynamic, Existential, and in a sense, all Behavioral approaches too. Some might say that Behavioral, Cognitive Behavioral and especially Dialectical Behavioral are less centered in humanism as the client is taught skills to change. But the client must want to change and use the skills. Strict reinforcement behavioralism can be done TO people without their consent. But it is still a form of humanism in my book because it leaves out the spiritual side of man and leaves out a Higher Power. In Christian counseling, the 1st premise is that God is the pinnacle of all things. And man is a fallen and condemned person (no longer good) who needs a Savior to guide him. Even
