What is hormone replacement?
Hormone replacement usually refers to the replacement of estrogen with an estrogen-like substance because the ovaries are no longer producing the hormone. Typically, another hormone, progestin must accompany the estrogen replacement. Progestin balances estrogen and prevents the uterine lining from growing too much, too thick, and becoming precancerous or cancerous. The combination of the estrogen and progestin is considered complete hormone replacement. There are many other kinds of hormone replacement—synthetic, natural or bioidentical hormone replacement.
