What is HIO and what does the organisation do?
We are a group of local volunteers and we bring together local people from different backgrounds, cultures and faiths to promote a sense of togetherness. We first got together in 2006 and our organisation was officially launched in 2007. Our aim is to encourage equality and diversity and provide opportunities for our voice to be heard in the local community. Before HIO there were already lots of different groups working really hard for the BME (black minority ethnic) community, but HIO has helped to bring everyone together and we can communicate our concerns collectively – we hope this will make it easier for our views to be heard. HIO is also a way for people to learn about each other, we often see people from minority group but don’t know anything about them. We hope that by bringing people together there will be greater understanding and therefore counteract misconceptions people may have.
