What is High-speed Internet?
It’s High-Speed “Cable” Internet. High-Speed Cable Internet does not tie up your phone line, so you are free to talk and surf at the same time. It is a residential service that we offer in bulk to your community. Our bandwidth is not intended for business use and should not be abused. Our High-Speed Internet users must have a cable modem to connect the computer to our Internet, so you’re always on. Also provided are multiple email accounts.
High-speed Internet is a technology that allows data to be transmitted over a dedicated digital circuit using ordinary copper phone lines between a business or residence and a telephone company’s central office. It works by replacing conventional analog call-switching equipment with digital modems known as High-speed Internet multiplexers (sometimes called ‘D-slams.) The speed at which homes and businesses can send and receive text, video and other data depends, in part, on how far away they are located from the central office where the D-slam is installed. High-speed Internet is the technology employed by EMBARQ to allow customers to transmit data at much higher speeds than traditional analog technology. This technology also allows you to make a phone call while transmitting data (while using the Internet, for example) on the same line. There are several EMBARQ® High-Speed Internet products offering speeds from 15 to 50 times faster than today’s analog modems.

Simply put, the term ‘high-speed Internet’ refers to Internet access that is faster than 56K dial-up. The term ‘broadband’ refers to any type of transmission technique that carries multiple voice, video or data channels simultaneously over a common wire. It is a large pipeline (much bigger than dial-up connection) that brings information to your home. In this instance, broadband refers to high-speed Internet access using this transmission technique.
