What is Hi-Density or High-Density Gardening?

Hi-Density gardening is a concept that maximizes the productivity of vegetable growing using the least amount of space and effort. These “mini-gardens” usually fit on a patio or deck and are ideal for people who want to pick fresh salads and vegetables without a lot of work. Give the plants what they want and they will grow. Hydroponics wizards, square-foot gardeners, raised-bed folk and the new style of container vegetable gardeners figured this out years ago. Plants thrive on water, nutrients, carbon dioxide and sunlight. How they get it really doesn’t matter and there’s no need to dig up the yard to provide for them. In fact, large open gardens are rather wasteful. Most of the water evaporates into the atmosphere and when it rains, a large percentage of the fertilizer is washed away from the plants. Plus there’s the work of controlling weeds.
