What is Her Majestys Inspectorate of Prisons for England and Wales?
A. The Inspectorate is a government body that has the statutory responsibility to conduct inspections of correctional institutions in the U.K. and to report on the treatment and conditions for offenders. Its overall objective of “healthy prisons”, which seeks to reduce re-offending, is compatible with the legislative framework that governs Canadian corrections. The inspection team that will assess Nova Institution for Women (Nova) and Grand Valley Institution for Women (GVIW) will consist of six inspectors who have either worked with women offenders, have been correctional administrators and/or have conducted several inspections of women’s institutions.
