What is Henna Hair Color?
Henna hair color comes from the henna plant which leaves contain a coloring called lawsone. Lawsone is extracted from the leaves of the henna plant. The dye is made when the leaves of the henna plant are crushed and combined with something acidic, like lemon juice, and left to combine over a period of 24 hours. The crushed leaves are made into a paste and combined with other natural dyes or plants to modify the color. How Henna Works The dye penetrates into the hair follicle, binding with the keratin in the follicle. Keratin is a protein in the hair follicle that binds with the lawsone molecules that dye the hair naturally. You will want to test the henna hair color on a small portion of your hair before applying to your entire head in order to see if you like the color. Since 100 percent natural henna is red orange in color you may want to add another natural dye or plant, like indigo or amla, an Indian gooseberry plant, if you’re looking for a black or dark brown hair color.
