What is happening to admission rates in private hospitals around Australia?
Nationally, patient admissions to private hospitals are growing at a much faster rate than in public hospitals and now total 2.7 million. In 2003-04, the proportion of all hospital patients admitted to private hospitals increased to around 39 per cent. In 2003-04, the average number of patients admitted to private hospitals in Australia was 132 per 1,000 weighted population, with the extremes being Queensland (165) and the Northern Territory (76).
