What is happening in Scotland in stem cell research?
Scotland has a long history of academic research in the field of stem cell biology leading to the production of some of the world’s first transgenic mice in the 1980s and most famously, the production of the world’s first cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep, in 1996. Through these activities, Scotland is now recognised as a leading centre for stem cell R&D. Edinburgh is home to Europe’s largest and highly-regarded stem cell research community, which is currently being brought together at the Centre for Biomedical Research located at the new Royal Infirmary at Little France. Unique within the UK, this location offers a large state of the art teaching hospital, world renowned Medical School and 1.4 million sq ft of research and development facilities, all on one site.
