What is Group G Streptococcus?
First make sure it’s Group G (uncommon) not one of the more common Groups. In humans, Group G streptococci are found in the upper airways at the back of the throat, on skin, and it can be part of the normal flora found in the gut and female genital tract. In recent years, Group G streptococci have been reported to cause a variety of human infections, such as sore throat, pharyngitis, cellulitis (skin infections), meningitis, infection of the heart valves (endocarditis), and sepsis. Blood stream infection (bacteremia) due to Group G streptococci has been related to underlying conditions, such as alcoholism, diabetes mellitus, malignancy, intravenous substance abuse, or breakdown of the skin. The diseases due to group C and G are much less common, but also because the diseases caused are less well-recognised.
