What is Ground School?
Flight training is divided into two parts: ground school and flight training. Ground school teaches students the principles, procedures and regulations that are put into practice during flight lessons. One portion of the certification process consists of a computerized exam. Ground school is designed to prepare students for this test. Ground school classes come in various formats, whether it is a classroom session, a computer based course or a home prep-course. An instructors endorsement is required for a student to take the FAA test.
Flight training is divided into two parts, ground school and flight training. Ground school teaches you the principles, procedures, and regulations you will put into practice in an airplane — how a wing generates lift, how to navigate from one airport to another, and in kind of weather you can fly. Before you can earn a pilot certificate, you must pass a computerized FAA knowledge test (with a score of at least 70 percent) on this information. You have several ground school options. You can attend a scheduled classroom course that may be held at a flight school, independent ground school, high school, or community college. There are also intense, weekend-long ground schools. Or you can take a home-study course, which is composed of videotapes and may include computerized test preparation software. Regardless of the option you chose, you’ll need an instructor’s endorsement to take the knowledge test.

Ground school consists of learning all the other stuff that you can’t learn while flying the plane. In ground school you will learn about aerodynamics, flight control mechanisms, flight instruments, weather and meteorology, map reading, flight rules, and flight planning. This is normally accomplished by studying from a book and by classroom sessions.
Traditional ground schools usually encompass coming to a classroom once a week at a set for 13 weeks or so. This can be inconvenient for many and generally may not be the best way to learn the material. Because of our affiliation as a Cessna Pilot Center, we offer a non-traditional ground school. When you enroll with AirSports, we will offer a Pilot Training Kit that consists of 20+ DVDs featuring some of the best instructors in the country teaching you just about everything you will need to know. And the equipment they use to demonstrate everything will be very similar to the equipment you will use – new Cessna 172s. All of this will help you not only in passing your written exam, but will expedite your overall training.
