What is grassroots organizing?
A mode of organizing from the ground up. The source of social change. There are many definitions. The one that I operate on consistently is a movement for change that is conceived, organized and implemented by the constituents of a community. For the purposes of this knol, we can consider grassroots organizing to be one of two things: first, the mobilization of a community by parties with a vested interest in the wellbeing of the community or second, a method of organizing/campaigning/marketing that focuses on appealing to the individual. The term is alleged to have been started by Senator Albert Jeremiah Beveridge of Indiana who said, speaking of the Progressive Party in 1912 “This party has come from the grass roots. It has grown from the soil of people’s hard necessities.” What grassroots organizing is not, is a advocacy against democracy or representative government.
