What is good reading for anybody about to embark on a CELTA COURSE?

Hi Dave You won’t get any books on the CELTA course – there will be a reading list but you’ll have to do the work of picking up those which are most relevant to your assignments etc. I would recommend Jeremy Harmer’s “The practice of English language teaching” (Longman), which explains the basics very well indeed, and a standard grammar book for EFL students, such as Murphy’s “Grammar in use” – this is because one of the integral parts of the CELTA course is to develop your language awareness. i.e. your knowledge of the grammar and phonology. Otherwise, if you’re doing the intensive 4-week CELTA, I strongly recommend staying on top of your work from day 1 so fill in your observation journals promptly – otherwise the last two weeks get really hectic. As part of your course, you will have to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of a learner and plan a lesson to help them address this – Michael Swan’s “Learner English” comes in really helpful here, as it outlines the typical difficulties
