What is going on with the scandal with the Governor of Illinois?
When Obama was elected, he was one of the two Senators from Illinois. He resigned his Senate job – his seat – so that he can become president. That left the job – the seat – open. The US Constitution says that when a senate seat is open, the state legislature decides how to fill that seat. Long ago, the Illinois legislature passed a law stating that the governor would appoint a person to fill an open seat. That appointed person would serve until the next Congressional election. In this case, that means that Gov. Blagojevich can appoint someone to the job from now until the next election in Nov. 2010. He’s supposed to appoint the most qualified person he can find. However, politics being what it is, it doesn’t always work that way. Gov. Blagojevich, according to the wiretaps, knows that this gives him a lot of power.
