Currently, the countries that are Parties to the CBD are negotiating an international regime on access and benefit-sharing. This regime, it is hoped, will lay down clear rules for accessing genetic resources and sharing the benefits from their use with the providers. At the moment, it is not known whether the regime will be legally-binding on party States or not. The Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity have agreed to finalize the regime in 2010 which will be the international year of biological diversity.
