What is Glycolic Acid and how does it work?
Glycolic acid is the simplest of a group of naturally occurring food acids referred to as Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHS’s. These organic food acids can be found in a variety of fruits and foods. Glycolic acid is thought to be the most effective and suitable fruit acid for cosmetic application. Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular structure of all the alpha hydroxy acids and is believed to possess the greatest penetration potential without significant skin irritation. Studies show that glycolic acid enhances exfoliation of superficial dead skin cells. This process, which is part of the skin’s natural rejuvenation process, normally slows down as we age. The skin’s outer dead cell layer, when present, prohibits new cells from migrating to the surface. Glycolic acid has the ability to dissolve the cellular cement that bonds these cells together.
