What Is Gluttony?
Gluttony, one of the so-called seven deadly sins, is the habitual over-indulgence of food and drink. While everyone needs to eat and drink several times a day, when these activities are carried to excessive lengths, the behavior is regarded as abhorrent. You could say that gluttony is an old-fashioned term for food addiction. Identification The theologian, Thomas Aquinas, defined gluttony as an “inordinant desire” to eat and drink. While one of the seven deadly sins, gluttony is considered by the Roman Catholic church to be a venial sin. This is because eating and drinking in themselves are not sinful. Gluttony occurs when someone indulges excessively and unduly in food and drink.
