What is gluten and is it found in oats?
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It is recommended that you avoid giving your baby gluten until they are at least 6 months old as babies are still developing and they find it difficult to digest. If gluten is introduced into the diet too soon then they may develop an allergy to it. After 6 months, gluten- containing foods can be introduced into the diet, unless there is a history of coeliac disease in the family. If this is the case then you should consult a doctor or dietition, and baby should not be given foods containing wheat, rye, barley and oats. Oats contain a protein that is similar to gluten. Unless there is a history of coeliac disease in the family then oats are a healthy and nutritious food that can be given to babies between 4 and 7 months.
