A16. The Earth is wrapped in an insulating blanket of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane. As the sun?s rays shine on the Earth, this blanket of gases traps some of the heat ? which has the effect of warming the planet and keeping it at a relatively constant level. Without it, the earth would either get too hot or too cold and life would not be able to survive. In effect the Earth is like a giant greenhouse. But instead of having glass panes which trap heat, the Earth has greenhouse gases. Global warming is a gradual warming of the Earth’s atmosphere and is believed to be caused by too many greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere by human activity such as burning fossil fuels (e.g. coal and oil), land clearing and increased farming. The increased concentration of these gases is like constantly adding more glass layers to the greenhouse, ultimately raising the temperature inside. The greenhouse effect is a more recent problem which results in global warming. Human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, have combined with natural processes to generate gases including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. These trap the sun’s heat inside the atmosphere and the result is global warming. It is not known but many scientists predict that, unabated, the greenhouse effect will significantly influence global weather patterns, causing rising sea levels and change both the urban environment and natural ecosystems.

Global Warming describes is current trend in average temperatures around the world increasing as a result of human activity. Using temperature measurements from historical records and current land and sea stations, in conjunction with satellite data; any doubt as to whether our planet is warming has been dispelled. Sea ice is retreating, glaciers are melting, species are migrating or disappearing and spring temperatures are arriving earlier each year.
Global warming is the name given by scientists for the gradual increase in temperature of the Earth´s surface that has worsened since the industrial revolution. Global warming has increased greatly over the last two decades, mostly due to human activities that have altered the composition of the atmosphere with emissions of green house gases. Among green house gases, we can identify primarily carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Read the paragraph “Is there evidence of global warming?”. If we do nothing, rising global temperatures will cause the sea level to rise and alter local climate conditions, affecting forests, crop yields, and water supplies.
