What is GFR?
The Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is the total filtering capacity of all available nephrons and equates to the % of renal function, i.e. a GFR of 65mls/min = 65% of normal function remaining. GFR can either be ‘measured’ using costly and invasive radio-isotope tests or ‘estimated’ (eGFR) using serum creatinine and patient age, sex and ethnicity.
