Gastric acidity is the term used to refer to the acid content of the stomach. Most of this acidity is due to the presence of hydrocholoric acid secreted by the mucosa (lining) of the stomach. The clinical laboratory can make two kinds of determinations involving gastric acidity: the concentration of acid in the stomach contents and the rate of acid output by the mucosa.
