Frontier spirit was the necessary gumption to sally forth into the unknown regions of the US in order to settle it. No one who was faint of heart even dared to go out on this mission. Watch the John Wayne movie “The Cowboys” it gives you some of the spirit you are looking for. “Lonesome Dove” the entire series shows you the frontier spirit too. Fitzgerald had to have heart to put up with his wife who is the female character in “Gatsby”. He stuck with the problems, the good times, the nutty times, the crap… and why because of his love for her and the hope he’d be able to find something better in his life with her.
