What is freeboard?
Freeboard is a safety margin to account for residual uncertainties in water level prediction and/or structural performance. It is the difference between the height of a flood defence or floor level and the design flood level. Freeboard should account for uncertainty in hydrological predictions, wave action, modelling accuracy, climate change, topographical accuracy, final flood defence levels and quality of the digital elevation models.
