What is Foster Care?
Foster care is a unique situation of temporary family-based care to children who cannot remain in their own home due to child protection concerns or exceptional special needs or who are ultimately to be given in adoption. In foster care the child is placed in a family for short or extended period of time depending upon the circumstances where the child’s own parent(s) usually visit regularly and eventually after the rehabilitation, where the children may return to their own homes.The Foster Care Programme is based on the belief that a family is the best environment for raising a child. A foster family is a temporary family for a child whose birth family is unwilling or unable to assume full responsibility for the child. The goal of foster care is to return the child to his or her own family as soon as possible.
Foster care is a program that provides temporary homes for children who, for one reason or another, cannot live with their families. Most children are placed with families (individuals or couples) who have been licensed by the state as foster parents. Some children, generally because we do not have enough foster parents, live in group homes.
Foster care is the temporary care of a child or young person within your home, during a time when they cannot live with their families. Foster care is for a planned period of time, with the aim of reuniting children and young people with their families. In cases when this isn’t possible, foster care provides a stable, secure and safe environment for a child or young person while a permanent care arrangement is made.
Foster care is temporary. It is a family setting for children who have been removed from their parent’s home. Foster care provides children with stability while their parents deal with the issues at hand. Foster parents are caring and stable people who can support and nurture a child. They help the child develop physically, mentally and socially – according to their needs. Foster parents work with a network of professionals who are involved with the child and his family. Foster parents mentor birth parents that are working toward reunification. They help children transition back to their birth home, transition to a permanent home or become the permanent home in some cases. Some families are providing care for a relative while other foster families provide care for unrelated children when no extended family members are available to provide care.
