What is Fort. Leonard Wood like?
I am a civilian, retired military, that works at Fort Leonard Wood. This time of year, expect it to be hot and humid. I grew up near here, and even when visiting on leave, the humidity would really affect me as it does most people. The towns just outside the base (Saint Robert and Waynesville) each have about 2500 population, so it is a small rural area. There are many caves in the area (even on base), a golf course, swimming pools (inside and outside), gyms, bowling alley, and even a putt putt course on base now, if you have the chance to visit them. Off post, about the only things around are Wal-Mart, tattoo shops, and strip clubs. If you like rural areas and hobbies, it is nice after you acclimate to the humidity. Best of luck.
I’m going there in about 2 weeks. I keep hearing everyone call it “Fort Lost in the Woods” but it’s not far from Lake of the Ozarks, which actually looks really pretty. A friend of my mom’s says there are a lot of good caves in the area if you know where to look, and some hiking trails around the Ozarks. I’ve also heard that it’s very hot and humid in the summer, but the fall is very pretty. Oh..and they have lightening bugs! (exciting for me, being from Utah and all). Honestly, if you look at it as being a new experience and a new place, I’m sure it won’t be so bad.
