WHAT IS FORENSIC AND INVESTIGATIVE LOCKSMITHING?
This is the field of study, which uses the systematic examination of a lock, security device or associated equipment. Scientific methods are used to determine if or how the device was opened, neutralized or by-passed. These types of examinations include the use of various types of microscopic examinations, microphotography, photography and physical disassembly. On occasion laboratory techniques such as metallurgy and tool mark identification may be conducted. The purpose of forensic and investigative locksmithing is to assist investigative agencies such as law enforcement, insurance and attorneys to determine whether a crime or illegal act has been committed and how it was accomplished. Such findings must meet the test of being replicable by other forensic and investigative locksmiths and be able to stand up in a court of law as admissible evidence.
