The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is currently studying the technical feasibility of using underground transmission for a portion of a larger 500 kV overhead transmission project. If the AESO determines that using underground transmission presents a technically acceptable option to meet the needs of the northeast region, then the Heartland Transmission Project will include an analysis of underground transmission in its Facility Application.
