What Is Flagellum Bacterial Cell?
A Flagellum is basically a tail like structure which projects from the cell body. It is present in specific species of Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and it facilitates locomotion. The Bacterial Flagellum consists of protein flagellin. It is a 20 nanometer thick and hollow tube, which is helical in structure having a sharp bend, in the form of a hook. This hook helps the helix to point away from cell. This cell is driven by a protein rotary engine which is located at the anchor of the flagellum on the inner cell membrane. This engine is actually powered by proton motive force which is the flow of protons across the bacterial cell membrane.
