What is Fire Prevention Week?
Fire Prevention Week was created as a week to focus on fire safety and fire prevention. This special week was designated as a result of the Chicago Fire that began on October 8, 1871 and burned for several days; as a result, more than 250 people were killed and over 17,400 buildings were destroyed or damaged. Fire Prevention Week always falls during the week of the anniversary of the Chicago Fire. Question: Who is NFPA and Sparky? Answer: NFPA is the National Fire Protection Association and they are the official sponsor of Fire Protection Week. Every year they come up with a new theme for Fire Prevention Week and for this year they have made candle safety the focus and theme for Fire Prevention Week because of the growing number of residential fires caused by candles. Sparky is the NFPA Fire Dog and of course he is a Dalmatian! Sparky teaches fire safety to children and even has his own Web site at Sparky’s News!
