What is Fibrous dysplasia of bone?
• Fibrous dysplasia of bone: A bone development abnormality that can occur in one or more bones. The bone develops tumor-like growths in bones where normal bone is replaced by fibrous tissue. It can occur as a single lesion or in multiples. Malignancy can occur but is rare. Symptoms are determined by the location and extent of the abnormality. Fibrous dysplasia of bone is listed as a “rare disease” by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Fibrous dysplasia of bone, or a subtype of Fibrous dysplasia of bone, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
