what is federation
Federation is a formal agreement between Rutgers University (Newark) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology to coordinate many activities of their respective Departments of Biological Sciences. The goal is to increase the quality of teaching and research by drawing from the larger, combined resource base. In particular, the curriculum and requirements of both the undergraduate Major in Biological Sciences and the various Graduate options are the same for both institutions, and students may take courses on both campus to fulfil those requirements. Federation also involves the sharing of office and laboratory facilities, the coordination of research, and long-term strategic planning. One of the two Department Chairs holds the additional, non-official title “Chair of Federated Activities,” and oversees aspects of governance that are coordinated. (In practice, this is most of them.) Administrative aspects of hiring, promotion and tenure, grant administration, student support, etc.
A federation is a consortium of repositories. Federations are usually formed regionally by institutions that independently support repositories and hold digital assets with strong common themes or subject interests. For example, UAiR might federate with Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University to present in concert any and all assets in each of the repositories as though they were a single repository. Other federations can be created for large-scale harvesting efforts based on collections or subject matter. Anyone interested in federating with UAiR should contact us.
Federation plants the seeds for Jewish renaissance and renewal; ensures the Jewish community never waivers on its commitment to provide human services and to advocate for just social policy; and works to continuously strengthen its community’s link to Israel and the worldwide Jewish family. Federation promotes the tolerance, the understanding, and the excitement that creates vibrant communities of Jewish learning and growth…and crosses all borders to pursue care for the poor; food for the hungry; and advocacy and compassion for everyone who needs it. Federation promotes meaningful philanthropy. Hands-on voluntarism. Shared commitment. And the power of the individual to make the connection that will make the difference in the federation community. It is our moral responsibility to ensure that we come to the aid of ALL Jews in need and, whenever or wherever possible, to all people in need. “Kol Yisrael Aravim Zeh L’zeh – All Israel is responsible for one another.” By collecting tzedaka
The Tampa Jewish Federation’s annual campaign is the engine that drives the support of Jews locally and worldwide. The TJF is one of 155 federations across North America, that raise a combined $1 billion each year to address urgent needs in local communities, in Israel and in 60 countries. According to Jewish tradition, the highest form of tzedakah or charity is giving to a central campaign or community fund or kupah. Throughout Jewish history, in small towns and large cities, within both Israel and the Diaspora, it was the custom of Jewish communities to create an address for centralized giving. This guaranteed the privacy and dignity of the poor as well as the successful maintenance of communal “agencies.” Today, the kupah (literally translated as community fund) is the annual campaign of the Jewish federation. The gift to the communal kupah, or centralized campaign, is a noble expression of devotion to the entire Jewish people. It demonstrates a love of community that is without lim
