What is Federal Work Study?
Work-Study is a federally-funded program and is awarded to eligible students through the Financial Aid & Scholarship Department at California State University, Northridge. Federal Work-Study (FWS) enables you to earn that portion of your expenses not covered by grants and loans. If you have been awarded FWS funds, you must work with an eligible FWS employer to earn them.

Federal Work Study (FWS) is a type of financial aid awarded to a student by the Office of Financial Aid. The Federal Work-Study Program allows undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, enrolled at least half time, to earn money at an on campus or off campus job to help pay for their educational expenses. In the Federal Work Study Program, the employer must pay 25% of the student’s wages, and the federal government will subsidize the remaining 75% of the student’s wages. In the Ohio Reads program, the government subsidizes 100% of the student’s wages. In regular student employment positions that are not part of the Federal Work Study Program, the employing department pays 100% of the student’s wages. Lake Campus: Students who have been awarded work study may only use the aid in on-campus jobs.
Federal Work-Study provides jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education-related expenses. The federal Work-Study wage is least the current federal minimum wage, but it may be higher, depending on the type of work and the skills required. The total Federal Work-Study award depends on when one applies, the level of need, and the funding level provided to YU.
The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program is a government subsidized student employment program designed to assist students in financing their post-secondary education. In order to be eligible for Work-Study, students must document financial need every year by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. The only way for students accepting their Work-Study (WS) award to receive the award amount is to get a job, work 12-20 hours per week, and earn it! Students are strongly encouraged to begin the job search early. Popular Work-Study positions such as Reading and Math tutors are highly sought after and tend to be filled quickly.
