Now at first glance someone may think of Father Goose as being a children’s movie based on the character of Mother Goose. Well, while there technically “is” a character name called that in the film, let me assure you that this is not anything like the nursery rhyme. Father Goose takes place in the South Pacific during World War II. An American, Walter Eckland, who has escaped the bureaucratic irony of the business world has purchased a yacht and is planning on riding out the war in peace and comfort — and an alcoholic stupor. Unfortunately he docks at a location run by an old friend of his, Commander Frank Houghton, who is blowing up the docks there in order to relocate because of the Japaneze advance. Houghton is in charge of something called the Coast Watching service which uses civilians to monitor Japaneze movements and report to them via radio.
