What is Fake ammunition for real firearms used for?

Okay there are 2 types of “fake ammunition”. I think you are talking about the second type. Blank rounds: These are made specifically for blank firing guns and produce a boom, but do not contain a projectile. These are often used as starter pistols at sporting events and in movies. You still have to be careful with these though because even though there is no projectile, there is a lot of hot gas that is released very quickly. There have been actors who have died because of misuse of these. The second type of “fake ammo” is called dummy ammunition, or snap caps. They do not contain any powder or projectile, yet are the same shape and size of regular ammo. These are used for training purposes. You can also dry fir the gun (pulling the trigger without real ammo in it) safely using snap caps. The little spring in the snap cap cushions the firing pin so it is not damaged. You seem to be talking about this type.

The “Fake” ammunition that you are asking about do not have any powder primer or projectile. When you squeeze the trigger these “caps” protect the firing pin. If you pull the trigger on an unloaded firearm there is a chance that the firing pin will be damaged due to the fact that there is nothing for it to strike. The energy that should go into the primer on a round is transfered back into the pin and it breaks. These “caps provide something for the pin to hit and thus protect it. There is no way you can “shoot” these rounds and they will not cycle your gun (ACP). A revolver will still cycle but still no bullet, no boom, no spent round.

Those red “fake bullets” are known as “Snap-Caps”. They are used for Training and and to Safely “dry fire” the firearm. The spring inside it puts pressure on the primer so you don’t damage the Striker or firing pin in the gun. On the training side they help to when the owner wants to safely practice clearing gun jams, and other malfunctions that may occur in a live environment.

The particular type you described sounds like the type used so people can get used to squeezing the trigger without launching a bullet or otherwise disturbing the neighbors.

Dummy rounds are used in firearms training…a dummy round will be loaded into the mix in a cylinder or magazine as a test for flinching.
