What is Face Value ?
A. The face value of a coin is the currency amount stamped onto the face of the coin by the government minting that particular coin. The cost of the coin, however, is determined by the market value of the precious metal content of the coin. For instance, US American Eagle gold coins come in face value denominations of $50, $25, $10, and $5 for 1-ounce, 1/2-ounce, 1/4-ounce, and 1/10-ounce coins. The cost of these coins is determined by the spot price plus premium, including commission, on the particular coin. If gold spot is at $1100, a $50 face value (1-ounce) American Eagle will cost $1100 plus premium, and a $25 face value (1/2-ounce) American Eagle will cost $550 plus premium.
