what is expressionism and impressionism?
Impressionism is a 19th century paris based movement started by Monet’s painting “Impression, soleil levant”. They started painting “en plain air” and broke the rules of painting by not focusing on details and using vivid colors. They caused a big initial controversy with their paintings, because they were the first movement to embrace unconventional painting methods. (Think Renoir, Monet, Pissaro, Morisot, Degas) Expressionism came after impressionism in Germany (20th century)and was a reaction to many movements including impressionism. It was comprised of paintings like Edvard Munch’s “the scream”. They wanted to make the painting represent the experience of being alive or create an emotional response. (Think Nolde, Mark, Macke, Kandinsky). Both movements are similar in that they wanted painting do more than copy a scene. With advent of photography in the 19th century, these movements gave painting a greater purpose and highlighted how much more emotional it can be. But they’re both
