Exempt status means that you no longer are required to take the continuing education in order to renew your license. The only requirement of an exempt licensee is to pay the renewal fees when they are due. Requirements for Exempt Status: Cosmetologist Must be licensed and in active practice as a Cosmetologist for 20 consecutive years or have been licensed and in active practice for 10 years and are 60 years of age or older. The year you graduated or the time you were an apprentice does not count as being licensed. Estheticians Must be licensed and in active practice as an Esthetician for 10 consecutive years and are 60 years of age or older. The year you graduated or the time you were an apprentice does not count as being licensed. Manicurist Must be licensed and in active practice as a Manicurist for 10 consecutive years and are 60 years of age or older.
