What is excretory urography?
Excretory urography is a test to evaluate the kidneys, urinary tract, and bladder. Medicine is given through an intravenous line (IV). This medicine moves through the body and is ultimately concentrated in the kidneys. A series of radiographs (X-rays) are taken, and are viewed by the radiologist to evaluate the kidneys, urinary tract, and bladder. Will my child feel any pain? No. The test is painless, with the exception of the IV stick. The IV stick may temporarily hurt, similarly to when your child receives an injection. How long will the test take? The test takes approximately one hour. May I stay with my child? If you are not pregnant, you may stay with your child, as x-rays are dangerous to a fetus. If you have small children, you should bring someone with you to watch over them. Children not taking the test will not be allowed in the examination room. Are there any special considerations? Yes.
