What is excimer laser refractive surgery?
Laser refractive surgery is used by ophthalmologists to change the shape of the cornea, the clear tissue window at the front of the eye, to improve the way it focuses light in the eye. The excimer laser produces ultraviolet light and emits high-energy pulses lasting only billionths of a second. In excimer laser refractive surgery, the ophthalmologist uses this laser energy to remove small and precise amounts of the corneal tissue to correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism. This laser is used in LASIK and PRK.
