You can reduce your health insurance premium by agreeing to pay a fixed amount towards the cost of any hospital admission, including same day treatment. The agreed amount you pay for each admission is called the Excess. The amount of the Excess varies depending on your choice of cover.

An excess is the amount for which you are personally, financially responsible in the event of a claim. Some sections of our policies have a 50 per person excess – this can be waived by purchasing an Excess Waiver Option (not available on Gap Cover). A higher excess of 200 will apply to any claim under the Medical Emergency and Repatriation Service section, where you have been taking part in Special Sports and Activities, this higher excess cannot be removed or reduced by use of the EHIC, or by purchasing the Excess Waiver Option.

Excess is the first amount of any claim for which you have to bear. As an example, if the claim amount is $2,000 and your excess is $500, you need to pay the first $500 and the balance of $1500 can be claimed from your insurer. The excess applicable will be specified in your Policy Schedule. The excess does not apply to claims pertaining to windscreen and windows.

This is the amount you will need to pay in the event of a claim. For example, if you have a £100 excess then you will pay the first £100 of the claim you make (excluding windscreen claims – comprehensive cover only). Before purchasing check to what excess you would have to pay, as compulsory excess may apply to certain drivers (e.g. young drivers). Read our quick guide to excess for more details.
