What is Estoppel?

Estoppel is a legal term referring to situations in which one is legally barred from doing something. A good example of estoppel would be if a criminal defendant was tried for a particular crime and acquitted by a jury, the District Attorney’s office would be estopped from filing the same charge against that person by virtue of the rule of double jeopardy. The law of estoppel then prevents the District Attorney from seeking to have that same person tried for the same crime.
