What is Essential Thrombocythemia(ET)?
Essential thrombocythemia is one of the myeloproliferative diseases (MPD). It is the MPD variant which is characterized by platelet counts greater than 400,000. The MPDs also include polycythemia vera (PV), Agnogenic Myeloid Metaplasia (AMM), secondary myelofibrosis (MF) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Each of these variants have predominant features which permit classifications which are named for the cell type showing the most marked involvement. There is a great deal of overlap in the features of these various syndromes and transition from one to another is common. 2.

Note-this is not to be confused with Thrombocytopenia (low platelets).
