What is Equitable Stroke Control (ESC)?
• ESC is the downward adjustment of individual scores in order to make handicaps more representative of a player’s “potential” ability. The ESC procedure sets a maximum score that a player can post on any hole depending on the players COURSE handicap. ESC is used only when a player’s actual or most likely score exceeds her maximum number based on the table below: Handicap Maximum strokes per hole 0 to 9 Double Bogey 10 to 19 7 strokes 20 to 29 8 strokes 30 to 39 9 strokes 40+ 10 strokes For handicap purposes, if you pick up on a hole, you should record the score you most likely would have made if you continued to play the hole ― not the score you usually make on that hole. There is no limit to the number of holes on which a player may adjust her score.
