What is entropy? Please give me a very simple definition of what it is!?
Entropy is the amount of order, or organization, that is present in a system. An example is a stack of books that are all neatly lined up the same way. This is a system with low entropy. If something disturbs the stack of books, then they will likely fall, and suddenly there is a lot of disorder; the books are scattered, some open and some closed, in a chaotic state. This is a system with high entropy. Things tend to move from low entropy to high entropy (i.e., a neat stack of books doesn’t stay that way for long). Also, systems tend not to move back to their low-entropy state (i.e., the books aren’t going to stack themselves back up again). It’s going to take a lot of energy (and some way of sorting and organizing) to restore a system to the neatly stacked state. (It really doesn’t have much to do with how much a system can be changed; just how hard it is to make it more organized.)
