What is Engineering?
Engineering is exploring the unknown. It’s asking questions and creating new things and new ideas. It’s building all-terrain vehicles, designing submarines, firing lasers and planning roadways. Engineering is a field that advances the boundaries of knowledge and tests the laws of nature. It’s the profession that has given us compact discs, sports cars and computers, helped make medical advances possible and put people in space. Engineering is bridges, superstructures, transistors and chemical processes. It’s power systems, grids and ergonomics. It is, in essence, everything around us that makes our lives easier, more pleasant and more productive. As an engineering student, you will learn principles and theories that prepare you to become a leader in the profession. You’ll have access to some of the most powerful engineering computer workstations available, and you’ll be taught by quality professors who are committed to your progress. Where will I start?
Engineering is a part of our daily lives from buildings to bridges and from highway traffic to internet traffic. Visitors who enter Tech City will learn about the engineering process of designing, building, testing, and modifying. The exhibition promotes engineering as a problem-solving process and encourages youth to consider a career in engineering, especially women and those from underrepresented minority groups.
Engineering refers to work that, because of it’s technical complexity, is required to be performed by a properly licensed person. It can be the design of beams, the foundation, or the design of bracing for wind or earthquake forces for your project, and can include the design of the air conditioning system, plumbing or electrical systems on larger project. It can be the design of your site plan, to address drainage, grading, compaction, building locations, handicap access, or other critical factors. The “engineering” can consist of pencil or pen “mark-ups” intended to be used by a non-licensed drafter or designer, or an architect drawing the plans for your project, with supporting “calculations” to show arithmetically how the work will comply with the code, or it can include complete plan sheets prepared by the engineer.
Engineering is the practical application of science and math to solve problems, and it is everywhere in the world around you. From the start to the end of each day, engineering technologies improve the ways that we communicate, work, travel, stay healthy, and entertain ourselves. Engineers are problem-solvers who want to make things work more efficiently and quickly and less expensively. From computer chips and satellites to medical devices and renewable energy technologies, engineering makes our modern life possible. In particular, electrical engineers and computer engineers have a wide range of study options and career paths that let them design, build, and manage those ideas into reality.
Engineering is an incredibly broad field which involves the harnessing of mathematical and scientific concepts to create practical and useful things, ranging from automobiles to wind turbines. This field is huge, encompassing people in a wide range of industries, and some people call it “the invisible science,” because engineers are often unsung and unheralded, despite the fact that the work they do is very important. Many colleges and universities offer courses in engineering, for people who are interested in pursuing this field as a career. Engineering is a very ancient field of human endeavor. Early humans utilized their knowledge of the natural world to figure out things like irrigation schemes and how to build boats which didn’t sink. Over time, as humans learned more about science and mathematics, engineering got more complex, and this field paved the way for the modern society we live in today.
